Some background......" The renowned Italian automobile manufacturer Alfa Romeo has been en- joying unparalleled esteem in numerous racing events since its foun- dation before the second world war. However, it was not until the post-war period that their road cars became popular among the masses. Following the release of the 1900 series in 1950 and the Giulietta series in 1954, the Giulia series was unveiled in 1962. Owing to the car's success Alfa Romeo joined the ranks of world-famous motor car manufacturers. The most sporty version from the series, the Giulia Sprint GT, was launched in 1963. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the body styling was an elegant coupe design, having the characteristic front mask with the traditional "Alfa shield and emblem" on the grille. The engine was a DOHC four cylinder configuration with a displacement of 1,570cc, producing 104 horsepower. The car is fitted with the front and rear disk brakes, which were exception- ally progressive for the period. In 1965 Alfa Romeo released their Giulia Sprint GTA based on the GT. They developed this car as a base car to vie for the European Touring Car Championships. "A" of GTA stands "Alleg- gerita" (meaning lightened in Italian) and it was actually 205kg lighter than the normal GT, having the body made of aluminum. Since its debut in 1966 for the series, it showed outstanding performance on the track and became a regular on the winners' podium. "........
