Some background......" The retirement of Honda rider Michael Doohan, who dominated 500cc World Championship Grand Prix Motorcycle Road Racing for an amazing five years straight added longed for unpredictability to the 1999 series. Also, the performance gap among competing motorcycles was signifi- cantly narrowed, making the series title a realistic goal for several teams. Though the title was ultimately taken by another Honda rider, Alex Criville, he was given a serious run for his money by up-and-coming, Suzuki RGV rider, Kenny Roberts Jr. At the opening of the 2000 series, all eyes were turned on Roberts Jr. as worthy challenger against the unshakable Honda team. His motorcycle, the RGV-I was a significant departure from the familiar blue and white coloring of past Suzuki machines. Sponsored by Telefonica, a Spanish telecommunications group, RGV-I was adorned with a bright yellow checkered pattern over cobalt blue. The guts of the machine were also tweaked. The powerful V4 engine was tuned to offer the rider more control; the frame was streamlined for weight savings. Furthermore, to optimize the overall balance of the bike, the heavier com- ponents were repositioned more centrally on the frame. Roberts started out the season with a 6th place finish in South Africa. He went on to take strong victories at the following Malaysian, Spanish, and Catalunya Grand Prix, and secure his position as point's leader. Roberts went on to brilliantly clinch the championship title by the close of the 14th Grand Prix in Brazil, with two races still left to go in the season. "........
